So you want to make a change and live a healthier lifestyle…fantastic news! But succeeding in the task is much more than simply wanting. It’s more complex than “Tell me what to do, doc” or “What are the steps I should take?”

First you need to examine your WHY?

WHY do you want to make a change?

WHY will you be willing to work hard to make it happen?


Anticipation of the destination

It is really exciting to be going somewhere, to be starting something new. You likely set goals, something that you can aim for and something to focus on – the destination or the outcome. We all do this, and we are told that it is good to have something to aim for.  

But hold on!

Before you set off you need to know where your starting point is. You need to find that before you can take the first step, because mapping your path or journey requires a reference point. If you know where you are starting you can better map your way to your destination – be more efficient, take less “unforeseen detours”, and arrive smoothly. YOU NEED DATA.

So this comes back to “YOUR WHY?”

If “Your Why” is fat loss (and it feels true to you) you need to know what your starting body fat percentage is, and how you are going to measure your progress along your journey. So you need a way to measure body fat. Does your scale do that? Are you interested in a DEXA scan?

Remember weight is just your gravitational force upon the earth – it says nothing about body fat percentage. Maybe some circumference measurements around your waist, buttocks, arms, and thighs could be helpful to watch along with weight.

Is “Your Why” overcoming food cravings or fixing your digestive issues? Then you need to rate those cravings or your discomfort somehow. On a scale of 1-10 how much does this affect you day to day, hour to hour, etc.

So you see, “Your Why” determines the trajectory of your journey. It determines your reference points, your challenges, your wins, your strategies and much more. It is what MOTIVATES you to work hard, to succeed. If you don’t fully understand this why, your chance of succeeding plummets…

So, I encourage you to take some time to think about these things before you start out on your journey to a healthy lifestyle. Think about:

  • Where are you now?
  • What do you want to overcome (be specific!)?
  • What do you want to accomplish (specific goals)?
  • How do you want to look/think/feel?
  • What metrics/tools/strategies will you use to measure your progress?
